What is Gastroparesis?

Gastro means Stomach and Paresis mean loss of tone - this means the stomach has lost its tone. When the stomach cannot empty itself or move out the partially digested food and it begins to remain inside the stomach the condition is termed as Gastroparesis. The symptoms of the condition include heartburn, or Gerd-like symptoms, Nausea, vomiting, a sense of bloating, a sense of feeling full and poor control on blood sugar level.

This condition occurs as a result of damage to the vagus nerve found in the stomach. This might occur due to diabetes which is a non-surgical cause. The other non-surgical cause is salt imbalance where there is a deficiency of potassium. When the vagus nerve gets damaged the movement (contraction and relaxation) of the stomach muscles is inhibited and hence the condition occurs. Gastroparesis can be caused by injury to the vagus nerve caused by any surgeries to the abdomen and certain viral infections, some medications, and some disorders.
